Earlier today we posted articles about our Year 2 launch of the Comcast Internet Essentials program in Seattle and the rest of the areas we serve in Washington State. To celebrate – and get people connected - We opened a phone bank at a Burien school and invited families to sign up for the low-cost Comcast Internet Essentials program.  Above you can enjoy a selection of photographs from the event.

You will see a variety of scenes: people talking about getting connected on the Internet, people who won prizes such as netbook computers, and kids enjoying a balloon artist as well as superstar (or supersponge) SpongeBob Squarepants.

Below, two speakers discuss the importance of the day and of getting people connected on the Internet: Steve Kipp, VP of Communications for Comcast in Washington and Kyle McSlarrow, President of Comcast NBC Universal who was visiting Washington for the event.

KING TV’s ‘New Day Northwest’ Highlights Longstanding Partnership of Comcast and El Centro de La Raza in Seattle

Steve Kipp of Comcast and Estela Ortega of El Centro de La Raza were guests on the May 1 KING TV New Day Northwest program. Click on the picture to go to the program's page and see the segment.

KING TV’s morning talk show, New Day Northwest, featured the subject of Comcast Cares Day during one of its segments today, May 1. KING’s Margaret Larson interviewed Estela Ortega of El Centro de La Raza and Steve Kipp, vice president of communications for Comcast in Washington.

Estela Ortega was very gracious as she described the aftereffects of 200 volunteers:  ”…it was about $20,000 worth of labor. We could not have afforded that. We need the dollars to go directly into the services to the community. So it was a great help. And this was our second year with Comcast. It helps save a lot of dollars.”

Margaret Larson described one of many reasons why companies do need to give back to the community: “ You make a very good point, because all nonprofits, especially these days when dollars are at such a premium, can’t put that money toward capital expenditures, the building, the asphalt. You know you have a whole in your parking lot, but if it’s a choice between that and feeding a family or doing something that’s critical, you have to put your dollars into the program, so this is unbelievably valuable to you.”

Steve Kipp talked about other ways that Comcast enjoys supporting El Centro de La Raza, such as through its youth Digital Connectors program: “We like to think of ourselves as partners, so if Estela needs something, she gives me a call, and we try to figure it out and work with them.”

More than 2,200 Comcast employees, friends and family members volunteered throughout Washington. You can read more and see photographs and video of the various 2012 projects here.

United Negro College Fund Names Comcast As Corporation of the Year in Washington State

award presented

Keith Toussaint, left, chair of the UNCF Gala, and Lacie West, Development Director, UNCF, present the Corporation of the Year Award to Steve Kipp, middle, of Comcast.

The local chapter of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) recently honored Comcast as its Corporation of the Year before more than 300 people, including the President and CEO of UNCF, Dr. Michael Lomax, during the organization’s annual fundraising gala held at the Experience Music Project in Seattle.

“Anyone who grew up in the 70s like I did, hearing the iconic UNCF advertising campaign ‘A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste,’ can’t help but get goose bumps thinking about the work this organization has accomplished over the years,” said Steve Kipp, VP of Communications for Comcast, who accepted the award on behalf of the company.

“UNCF has distributed more funds to help minorities attend school than any entity outside of the U.S. government. That’s a fact that makes the decision to support UNCF an easy one for Comcast,” Kipp told the audience.

UNCF honored Comcast with a Dr. Frederick D. Patterson award for its ongoing support of the UNCF’s Portfolio Project which helps high school junior and seniors, most of whom will be the first in their families to attend college, learn how to apply for school and earn scholarships to pay for their education.

The award is named after the UNCF’s founder and honors individuals and organizations who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to and belief in UNCF’s mission.

A Local Perspective on Xfinity

Here’s the email that Steve Kipp, Washington State VP for Communications, sent to a local tech reporter:

XFINITY is launching in this market right now. In the coming weeks, you will begin to see the new brand on our trucks, in advertising and on the uniforms of our cable installers and technicians. XFINITY is a new brand for our technology platform and products. We’ve invested hundreds of millions of dollars into improving our fiber optic network in Washington and plan to continue to make investments and improvements in our network for years to come. The XFINITY brand is a way for us to wrap all of those improvements under one umbrella.

Here is a link to more about the brand on our company blog: http://blog.comcast.com/2010/02/comcast-launches-xfinity.html

We are rolling out the new branding in markets like Seattle that have launched DOCSIS 3.0 and completed the World of More (digital migration of channels) project. In fact, that project, really paved the way for XFINITY by giving us the extra bandwidth we needed on our network to add more channels and increase Internet speeds.

We already deliver Internet speeds of up to 50 Mbps down in Washington, more than 100 channels in high definition, thousands of programs on Comcast ON DEMAND and a high-speed 4G wireless data service.

I think it is important to note that XFINITY also is a promise to our customers that we will continue to innovate and offer new product improvements. Here are some of the future product enhancements we are planning for the Washington market under the XFINITY brand:

· Download speeds to 100 Mbps or even faster;

· More channels in high definition;

· Offer as many as 50 to 70 multi-cultural channels;

· Significantly more video on demand choices, increasing from about 10,000 today to more than 20,000 and beyond;

· More television shows and movies available on Fancast XFINITY TV that allows our customers to watch shows online or while on the road.

· New converged and wireless features that let our customers’ TV, phone and Internet work seamlessly together in new and innovative ways. (Examples of this already launched in Seattle include Universal Caller ID on the television and our High-Speed 2go™ wireless service.)
