Comcast Cares Day Helps Laura, 100 Years Young, to Live Independently in Olympia, Washington

We now have hundreds of Comcast Cares Day volunteer projects on the books, and you could never pick a favorite one. However, we have a nominee for one of the sweetest people we ever helped.

The video above tells the story of a 100-year-old in Olympia whose spirit is an inspiration to all who meet her. I hope the video inspires you to think young … and also to volunteer. Volunteers on Comcast Cares Day 2012 made a big difference in Laura’s life. As the video explains, their work allowed Laura to stay in her own home, living next door to her daughter. To Laura, that’s the world. To us, it’s another great Comcast Cares Day project.

Big thanks to Rebuilding Together Thurston County for allowing us the privilege of helping Laura. Big thanks to our video magician, Ed Hauge, for joining me to meet Laura and filming the video above. You can read more about this year’s projects, coming up on April 27, here.

This Month’s Comcast Neighborhoods Program: Olympia, Washington

Join Sabrina Register this month as she explores Olympia, Washington. “Olympia is a community of artists,” say Mayor Stephen H. Buxbaum; if you don’t already know Olympia, you’ll see why he says that when you watch the show. Among the places we visit on the program:

Budd Bay Cafe

Capital Playhouse

Farmer’s Market of Olympia

Hands On Children’s Museum (check out their amazing new building in a waterfront location)

McMenamins Spar Cafe

Olympia Artesian Well

Percival Landing

I know, I know – nothing about the capitol campus, eh? No worries; we’re proud sponsors of the state channel TVW and you will find everything you want to know about state government at their site.

The United Way at Comcast in Washington

As we told you before, our local offices get excited about United Way drives to raise money for the needy in the communities we serve. The results from the two-week drive are in and are impressive: more than $193,000 donated or pledged to United Ways in Puget Sound and Spokane. All our Washington State offices stepped forward, but a couple of offices raised so much money through special events that they actually had more than 100 percent participation (in effect, people gave twice – through pledges and through donating at special events). Our stars included the Aberdeen office, which is relatively small, but tightly-knit and with a strong heart for Grays Harbor. Other high performers included our call centers in Lynnwood and Fife and our field office in Olympia. One place with a lot of heart is Everett: both our field office and our call center recorded high participation.

Nationwide, Comcasters donated $5.6 million. If you’re passionate about United Way and the people it serves, it’s worth reading this blog post by Savannah Guthrie, Co-Anchor of “Today”

Enjoy the Best of the NFL at Southcenter, Tacoma, Northgate and Capital Malls on Sundays

RedZone on Comcast

Click on the RedZone logo to watch a short video about the channel

We know that not everyone watches football at home or at a bar on Sundays, even though they want to. Sometimes you have to be out at a mall, buying stuff almost as important as football … we’re not sure what is as important as football, but maybe it’s stuff like clothing and things for your children.

Comcast is here to scratch your football itch: in certain malls where there’s room to watch, we’ll be showing NFL Redzone on Sundays.  Stop on by for a short time, or longer if you can send someone else into stores to do the actual shopping.

We’ll have at least one of the HD screens at these malls tuned to RedZone from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at these Comcast kiosks:

You are welcome to come on by and watch for as long as your shopping needs carry you away from your home screen or bar.

And if you don’t know what RedZone is … wow, you have a treat ahead of you. RedZone shows you every moment of exciting NFL action, wherever it takes place. You can read a previous post here about why RedZone is essential for any football fan.

note: this post was updated Oct. 3 to add Tacoma Mall throughout

Comcast Employees, Family and Friends Make a Big Difference Throughout Western Washington and Spokane on 11th Annual Comcast Cares Day

It’s hard to know what to say to the more than 2,200 local Comcast employees and their families and friends who volunteered Saturday, April 21, 2012, at 13 school and nonprofit sites around Western Washington and Spokane as part of Comcast Cares Day.

Comcast’s Steve Kipp was one of several people that KIRO talked to the morning of Comcast Cares Day at our volunteer site of El Centro de La Raza in Seattle. Click on the picture to see the interviews.

Of course, we do say, Thank You. But one thing we like to do is collect photographs and stories from the day, as part of this wonderful scrapbook that we all call the Internet. So if you keep an eye on this post, you will see a gradually growing list of links to photographs and stories about our volunteers’ hard work.

Here is a list of projects and reports:
