Department of Defense Honors Comcast for Support of Employees Who Serve in the Washington National Guard and Reserve

Comcast was honored for its support of the military. From left to right, Jeff Votaw, director of technical operations, Comcast Seattle field office; Pete Stemmermann, technical operations supervisor; Specialist Mathew Ellison; Marjorie James, employee outreach coordinator for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve; and Michael Cindric, vice president, human resources, for Comcast's Washington market.

The following comes from a press release from the U.S. Department of Defense’s organization Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

The Washington Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR,) an agency of the Department of Defense, announced today that Pete Stemmermann, Technical Operations Supervisor, Comcast, was honored with a Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support his employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

According to Marjorie James, ESGR Employer Outreach Coordinator, “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support to their employees who have answered the nation’s call to serve. ESGR presents a Patriot Award on behalf of an employee who requests that this honor be awarded to his or her manager or supervisor. Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s National Guard and Reserve units.”

Mr. Stemmermann was nominated for the Patriot Award by his employee, Specialist Mathew G. Ellison, a member of the US Army Reserves. Specialist Ellison said of his employer, “My supervisor, Mr. Stemmermann, is flexible with my work schedule, allowing me time to prepare for my deployment. My company, Comcast, continues my employee benefits throughout my deployment.”

As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an increasing number of unique missions within America’s borders and beyond, ESGR will continue to be a primary resource for their employers. ESGR provides education, consultation, and if necessary mediation for employers who have concerns about USERRA (the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994.) USERRA protects the employment rights of Guard and Reserve forces nationwide. For more information about ESGR Employer Outreach Programs and volunteer opportunities, please visit www.esgr.mil or call the State office at 877-306-1971.

We chatted with both Spec. Ellison and Pete after the plaque presentation; here’s what they had to say about military service and employer support:

Comcast Names 90 Students as Leaders and Achievers Scholars in Western Washington and Spokane County for 2012-13

The Comcast Foundation today announced the names of 90 recipients in Western Washington and Spokane County of the 2012-13 annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program awards.

“Each year, we are excited to provide scholarships for these talented students,” said Charisse R. Lillie, President of the Comcast Foundation and Vice President, Community Investment, of Comcast Corp. “Comcast seeks students who demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities and who reflect a strong commitment to community service.  These students are our future leaders, and we hope these scholarships will help to power their dreams for success.”

“All the young people on this list have built impressive track records of service to others, and show great potential to community service throughout their lives. We’re proud to help these young people along with their education and careers, just as they’ve already been helping the community throughout their high school years,” said Len Rozek, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Washington market.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program provides $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. New and Interactive Xfinity Store That Opens Today Says Yes to iPads and No to Lines

One of the first half dozen of these stores around the nation celebrates a grand opening in Washington.

Comcast on March 23, 2012, announced the grand opening of its new XFINITY™ Store in Federal Way.  The 4,900-square-foot store is designed entirely around the needs of customers and provides Comcast customers with an opportunity to explore, learn about and interact directly with the latest XFINITY products and services.

The new store will have twice as many employees as the previous store, growing from five employees to 10.

Located at 31423 Pacific Highway South in Federal Way, the new XFINITY Store is conveniently located on a major bus route and features a 3D 65-inch flat screen TV and a comfortable seating area.  Kiosks around the store provide customers with the opportunity to experience XFINITY TV and super-fast XFINITY Internet speeds, connect with XFINITY Voice service, try out the next-generation XFINITY Home’s smart home services and demo the popular XFINITY TV apps on iPads located throughout the store.

Customers can take advantage of the speed and convenience of paying their bills using express payment kiosks. Customers also will spend less time in line, because the store utilizes a queue system that gives them the freedom to roam the store and learn more about the latest XFINITY products while waiting for service.

Most importantly, for those customers who wish to speak to a Comcast representative directly, trained and knowledgeable customer service consultants are available throughout the store to answer questions and demonstrate new products.

“We’re proud to offer a brand new experience for our customers where they can try out our XFINITY products and services firsthand and meet face to face with knowledgeable customer service consultants who can help them get the most out of their existing services,” said Len Rozek, senior vice president of Comcast’s Washington Region.  “This new store model has a more welcoming design and a friendly atmosphere as we apply the same mindset of innovation, speed and utility that our customers love about our products to our customer service.”

The XFINITY Store is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 31423 Pacific Highway South (located on the Pacific Highway side of the mall, across from Barnes & Noble).  This center replaces a facility at 1414 S. 324th Street and which was 1,200 square feet.  Comcast currently has 15 stores located throughout Washington.

Note: This blog is not a good place to ask questions about your Comcast equipment because it is not monitored 24/7. Please contact Comcast via phone, email, Twitter or many other methods.

This Xfinity Store is the first of its kind in Western Washington and one of the first half dozen of its kind in the country. Customers can use express bill-pay kiosks and see the latest products and services demonstrated on iPads and other gadgets.

This is not your father’s “cable store:” this is an  interactive place where you don’t face a long line, you can see features demonstrated on the latest technology and most importantly, you can get done what you want to get done quickly.

Comcast is starting to open a new kind of store throughout the country, and we get our first of its kind in Western Washington on Friday, March. 23. United Negro College Fund Names Comcast As Corporation of the Year in Washington State

award presented

Keith Toussaint, left, chair of the UNCF Gala, and Lacie West, Development Director, UNCF, present the Corporation of the Year Award to Steve Kipp, middle, of Comcast.

The local chapter of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) recently honored Comcast as its Corporation of the Year before more than 300 people, including the President and CEO of UNCF, Dr. Michael Lomax, during the organization’s annual fundraising gala held at the Experience Music Project in Seattle.

“Anyone who grew up in the 70s like I did, hearing the iconic UNCF advertising campaign ‘A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste,’ can’t help but get goose bumps thinking about the work this organization has accomplished over the years,” said Steve Kipp, VP of Communications for Comcast, who accepted the award on behalf of the company.

“UNCF has distributed more funds to help minorities attend school than any entity outside of the U.S. government. That’s a fact that makes the decision to support UNCF an easy one for Comcast,” Kipp told the audience.

UNCF honored Comcast with a Dr. Frederick D. Patterson award for its ongoing support of the UNCF’s Portfolio Project which helps high school junior and seniors, most of whom will be the first in their families to attend college, learn how to apply for school and earn scholarships to pay for their education.

The award is named after the UNCF’s founder and honors individuals and organizations who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to and belief in UNCF’s mission.
