Everyone here at Comcast in Washington State is excited about the news that in the summer of 2012, we’ll be carrying a new regional sports network dedicated to Washington. The many Huskies and Cougars who work here are probably the most excited!

We like how the folks at Comcast’s corporate blog put it:

“We are thrilled to have reached this agreement with the Pac-12 to carry hundreds of live events for fans of the conference and college athletics starting in the summer of 2012. We’re particularly excited about the terrific value this deal will deliver to our customers, including bringing more live local sports on television, more on demand, and the Pac-12′s terrific content online so fans can keep up-to-date on their favorite college teams at home or on the go.

“Comcast already serves as the home for the most live sports on TV and online. With over 550 live events at the outset and over 850 within the next few years, plus the carriage of numerous Pac-12 games on ESPN networks and FOX, Comcast will be the place for Pac-12 fans to watch their favorite team in action.”

Several other networks will serve other states. This story  is just starting to circulate in the media; read an account in Spokane’s Spokesman-Review here.

Check out this blog on a Cougar site for thoughts on what the new network could mean to WSU.

I’m still waiting on a Husky site to write something similar; if you see a good post about what this means for UW, let me know.

Comcast Neighborhoods On Demand: Aberdeen

Located in Grays Harbor County, Aberdeen is famous for being home to famous musicians and writers. This former mill town of about 17,000 people is a fascinating place.

So that’s why Aberdeen will be featured on our locally produced segment “Comcast Neighborhoods” in August. Watch what Comcast Neighborhoods host Sabrina Register has to say about Aberdeen. You’ll find this new segment On Demand starting on Monday, Aug. 1. Comcast Digital TV customers can go to On Demand and then click on “Get Local.” Then go to ‘Around the Sound” and click “Neighborhoods.” Among the sights and sounds and people featured:

  • Cobain plaque

One of Aberdeen’s most famous former residents is now memorialized in town. Along the Wishkah River and next to the Young Street Bridge, you’ll find a patch of city land that pays tribute to Kurt Cobain, the late frontman of Nirvana. Cobain often claimed he briefly lived under a bridge over the Wishkah River, which inspired his song “Something in the Way.”

Visitors can now visit this plaque as well as a statue of Cobain’s beloved Fender Jag-Stang guitar, in a park by the Young Street bridge. The plaque and statue were unveiled during a ceremony April 5, on the 17th anniversary of Cobain’s death.

  • Driftwood Players

For more than 50 years, the members of the Driftwood Players have been gracing Aberdeen with their theatrical presence. The non-profit Driftwood Players performs five times a year and have put on over 245 plays since 1959. A new season begins in September with “Flaming Idiots,” followed by its winter production “Glorious.”

  • D&R Theatre

If you like live entertainment, you’re in for a treat! The historic D & R Theatre, which opened in 1923 and hosted vaudeville acts, has been meticulously restored to resemble its original state. This cozy theater now boasts a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system and other modern features.

Whether you like rock, country or comedy, top acts are coming to the D & R Theatre including REO Speedwagon, Gallagher, Wynonna and the B-52′s.

  • Ahoy Maties!

Washington state’s official ship is docked in Aberdeen. The Lady Washington is a full-scale replica of the original vessel that was a privateer in the American Revolution. She and her partner the Hawaiian Chieftain welcome the public for summer sailing in Puget Sound. The ships also provide educational opportunities for thousands of children each year. With 156 lines and six miles of rigging, the Lady Washington is one impressive ship!

“We want our customers to have a great experience with Comcast, and we’ve been making significant investments to enhance our products while improving the service and support we deliver,” said Sean Brushett, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Comcast in Washington.  “Given the incredible growth and complexity of personal electronic devices, our customers have told us they would like additional choices for technical assistance beyond the support we already provide for their video, Internet and voice services.  As we continue to invest in the overall Comcast experience, Xfinity Signature Support lets us provide an end-to-end technical support solution for customers.”

Comcast Neighborhoods On Demand: South Lake Union

South Lake Union is one of Seattle’s most beautiful places, full of boats and water-goers even on the city’s grayest days.

Watch what Comcast Neighborhoods host Sabrina Register has to say about this area. You’ll find this new segment On Demand. Comcast Digital TV customers can go to On Demand and then click on “Get Local.” Then go to ‘Around the Sound” and click “Neighborhoods.”

1.Historic boats
A stroll along South Lake Union gives visitors front-row seats to a couple floating pieces of history. The Virginia V boasts a triple-expansion, double-action steam engine that was built at the turn of the twentieth century but still works today. Also moored at South Lake Union is the historic Arthur Foss, the oldest floating wooden tug boat in the United States. The Foss gave prospectors a lift during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800′s. She was even featured in the 1933 movie “Tugboat Annie.”

2. Sailing!
There are numerous opportunities to get out on the water when visiting South lake Union. The Center for Wooden Boats offers free public sails every Sunday. The non-profit, volunteer-powered center also rents sailboats and row boats for a nominal fee, so grab your boat shoes and a friend and get going!

3. Float planes
South Lake Union isn’t just busy with boats: sea planes are constantly buzzing in and out of Lake Union, especially during the summer. In fact, South Lake Union is one of the busiest sea plane bases in the continental U.S.

Comcast Neighborhoods On Demand: Auburn

Start your summer off with a bang by visiting Auburn, a city with just about anything for anyone! Comcast Neighborhoods visited this city that boasts million-dollar views of Mount Rainier. Comcast digital TV customers can learn what host Sabrina Register has to say about this city by going to On Demand.  Then, in order, click on “Get Local,” “‘Around the Sound,” and “Neighborhoods.”

In addition to the spectacular scenery, the city has a lot to offer both its visitors and those who are lucky enough to call it “home.” With the world class Auburn Symphony Orchestra, shopping and even horse racing, there’s something for everyone in Auburn!

1. Emerald Downs:

And they’re off! Excitement builds on every turn at Emerald Downs as horses and their jockeys gallop into the homestretch.

If you love to place a bet – or just love horses – you’re in luck with the state’s only Class 1 Thoroughbred racetrack located right in Auburn.

Did you know there are nearly 1,000 horses at Emerald Downs, with some as young as two? Their days start before dawn as they prepare to put on a one-of-a-kind show for you.

2. Auburn Symphony Orchestra:

Although Auburn may not be the size of Seattle, it can still boast about its critically-acclaimed symphony orchestra that rivals those from the big city.

Stewart Kershaw, the conductor and music director, holds the baton and the key to making these talented musicians sound so beautiful. Every year, the Auburn Symphony Orchestra performs three symphony programs and three chamber ensemble concerts for classical music lovers.

3. Auburn playground:

The people of Auburn love to gather together! Luckily, the city makes it easy to just that.

In Auburn, you’ll find lots of public parks, play fields and playgrounds.

It’s just one of many reasons why people love to call Auburn “home.”

4. Public Art:

Walk around the city of Auburn and you’re bound to see plenty of public art. The city’s people have invested in public art because they believe it expresses the soul of the city, and much of the art is located in the city’s parks and green spaces.

Click here to visit the city’s website, which has a section dedicated to arts and entertainment that details the public art located throughout Auburn.
